The construction of the church was largely funded by Polish Catholics living in Tbilisi, who played a significant role in the city's social life during the 19th century. During the Soviet period, the church was never fully closed, although its religious functions were greatly restricted. Later, the church became a cultural and spiritual center for the Polish community, and its significance was so great that Pope John Paul II personally visited it in 1999 and conducted a service.
